Jai Kishor @ Artscape/Exotic Hypnotic, Langsdale Auditorium, July 22, 2007, Baltimore, MDThe final day of the Exotic Hypnotic music marathon began with a soaking of meditative Hindustani classical music as Jai Kishur played a raga on the Surbahar for most of the first hour. Accompanied by one of his students on the tamboura, this was the Exotic Hypnotic living up to both sides of its billing. The prolonged stability of tonal gravity provided by the drone texture allowed for all kinds of rich inventiveness of melodic development and microtonal contour. Hearing this music live put Jai Kishor on my radar as I'll be watching for other opportunities to hear him play around town.
